The idea is to keep the upper body stable. Sure, there will always be a little movement of the head during the swing, we are simply moving too fast. I dont think anyone keeps their head completely still. However, the better players are able to maintain the center of the shoulders as a fixed point. To do this, understanding when to extend the spine and when to flex the spine is important.
Here’s a few videos explaining the process. I just hit record on the range during the middle of a lesson.

So with extension on the backswing, May get the feeling that my head feels as if it is actually ahead of the ball at the top?
Also, on the takeaway , is the club supposed to feel like it comes off the ground quicker, not a low takeaway?
Correct! Here’s a video of Steve Elkington exaggerating the drill https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHEw7BvsG28
As for the takeaway, it depends if you’re a early loader or late loader. As long as you’re fully loaded at the top your all good. Make sense?
Your video above on extension in the backswing, at the top your spine is basically shaped like a backwards C, sort of the opposite of the follow thru when it is bent back as a reverse C. I guess how much you can extend it back at the top facing the target is a function of ones flexibility. Your spine isn’t vertical at the top in that video, it’s arched a little, which is great , correct?
Yes. Reason I ask on the takeaway is when I tilt left to start the club comes up quickly

Correct. Look how much DJ extends and tilts left at the top.
Ok thanks
When you bend back on the backswing, should I feel pressure into my left foot?
Then come down in flexion and bend back opposite way on downswing to pull club out of the ground?
Pressure loads into trail foot during the backswing.
James is ok to start the backswing for a right handed player with a little tilt down of the left shoulder to get things started, then turn and straighten right leg? Helps me get the shoulders more vertical
